Writer Colleen McKeegan has stumbled upon an unexpected source of relaxation and creativity: LEGO. Over the course of just two months, she has built an array of intricate structures, including five robots, three helicopters, two sharks, a hovercraft, a science lab, Bowser’s car from Super Mario, and even the iconic Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter. She embarked on this journey with her husband and son, creating a unique bonding experience amid the structured chaos of tiny colorful bricks.

For McKeegan, LEGO became more than just a pastime. It turned into a form of meditation. “When I play with LEGO, I feel like I found myself many years ago, the pressures of life suddenly disappear. I think this is the way to help me open up the world of meditation,” she shared. The author of “Rip Tide” found solace in the structured process of following instructions, where every piece has a predetermined place. This methodical assembly allowed her to free her mind from the invisible pressures of publishing and focus entirely on the task at hand.

Interestingly, McKeegan discovered parallels between building LEGO models and writing novels. Both activities involve starting with numerous small pieces—be they plastic bricks or words on a page—and gradually constructing a complete, satisfying story. The accomplishment she feels upon completing a LEGO model mirrors the satisfaction of finishing a novel. In a world full of uncertainty and anxiety, these structured activities provide her with a sense of control and tranquility.

When McKeegan and her son completed a LEGO model, she felt like she had recreated a perfect world. It was a place where she could control outcomes and create magic from small pieces.
