Introduction

The recent bookseller salary survey has unveiled significant salary disparities across the UK publishing industry. Launched in early January, the survey attracted 746 responses within just three weeks, highlighting the varied earning potential within this diverse field.

Survey Results Overview

The figures indicate that salaries range drastically from £18,000 to over £120,000, with an average salary of £36,086, which is slightly below the UK average full-time salary of £37,430 as reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in April 2024. The majority of respondents are middle class, with nearly 73% identifying themselves as such.

Demographics and Salary Insights

Analysis of the demographic data reveals that nearly half of the respondents were aged between 24 and 25, while 27% were aged 35 to 44. In terms of education, approximately 60% held a university degree, and 35% possessed a higher-level degree. Most respondents identified as women, constituting over 80% of the sample, and nearly 20% reported salaries between £30,000 and £34,999 a year. Significantly, 59% expressed that they did not feel their pay was commensurate with the work performed.

The survey illustrates the complexity of salary benchmarks in publishing, as reported pay rates suggest difficulties in establishing consistent industry standards. A representative from the British Publishers Association emphasized the unique challenges posed by the industry’s diversity and varied role offerings.
