What to Expect at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024

Introduction to the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024

The Frankfurt Book Fair 2024, scheduled from October 16-20, promises to be one of the largest and most diverse events in its history. According to Publishers Weekly, this year’s fair is focused on rejuvenating the industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it a pivotal occasion for publishers and literary professionals worldwide.

Thematic Focus and Programs

With the slogan “read!ng,” the Frankfurt Book Fair 2024 is set to embrace the multifaceted nature of modern publishing, including audiobooks and podcasts. Juergen Boos, director of the fair, emphasizes that regardless of the medium, reading remains fundamental to the industry. This year aims to highlight not only the importance of reading but also the significant role book fairs play in the development of publishing, the elimination of illiteracy, and fostering cultural exchange.

Growth After the Pandemic

Although attendee numbers have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels of 2019, there is a positive trend in participation. The 2023 event hosted 105,000 publishing professionals and 4,000 exhibitors, indicating a consistent recovery. Additionally, the sale of copyright remains central to the fair, underscoring the need for adequate meeting spaces for industry professionals. With a record 540 tables booked at the Literary Agency and Guidance Center (LITAG), the event emphasizes the growing importance of rights exchange.
