Washing machine
Bacteria can build up in your machine, causing problems like unpleasant smells. Luckily, a regular light clean combined with a deep clean three or four times a year can tackle this. To deep clean your machine, start with your detergent drawer. Use your regular cleaning spray and an old toothbrush to scrub away any build-up both inside the drawer and in the cavity it fits into. Dry thoroughly before reinserting into the machine.

To clean the filter, place a bowl or towel on the ground in front of it and remove the emergency drain tube. Open the filter cover and trapped debris should emerge with the released water. Use a damp cloth to clean the filter before returning the tube to its usual position.

You can clean the machine’s drum by running a hot wash while it is empty. adding a dishwasher tablet or a cup of white vinegar can also help to remove dirt.

Don’t forget the door seal. Wipe it down after each wash and treat any mould or mildew that has developed with a dedicated spray on the seal and wiping with a damp cloth.

Dryer
For a dryer deep clean, start with your lint trap. Remove the built-up lint and use your vacuum to clean it thoroughly. If your machine has a vent duct, unscrew the clamps or remove any tape attaching it to the back of the dryer (you may need a screwdriver). Remove large pieces of lint with your hands, brush out the remaining lint and use a vacuum to collect the remaining lint or dust. Reattach the vent.

For condenser dryers, open the condenser cover at the front of the machine and turn the lever to unlock it. Lower the lid and remove any fluff you can see using a vacuum or a damp cloth.

Your drum may have residue remaining if you use products like dryer sheets or fabric softener. Dip a cloth in warm water and washing-up liquid and use it to wipe down the drum. Next, wipe with a wet sponge or towel — dry a load of clean clothes or towels to dry the drum after this.

If you notice a smell from your drum, white vinegar can help to neutralise the odour. Spray some white vinegar onto some old towels, place them inside the tumble dryer and run a cycle.

After you complete the cleaning, leave the door open or run the dryer while it is empty for between 10 and 15 minutes to remove excess dust from the system.
