    Make a natural cough syrup

This onion and honey solution is a simple remedy for coughs – the onion has antibacterial properties and the honey soothes sore throats. Don’t be put off by the onion flavour; the inclusion of honey ensures that the mixture is satisfyingly sweet.

Take one teaspoonful four to five times a day until symptoms improve. If symptoms persist after a week, consult your doctor.

    Step 1
Peel, top and tail a large white onion, then slice it in half.
    Step 2
Place half the onion in a glass bowl and pour in enough clear honey to cover it.
    Step 3
Cover the bowl with cling film and leave it for three to four hours so that the honey draws all the beneficial juices from the onion.
    Step 4
Strain the liquid into a sterilised bottle and keep it in the fridge. Compost the onion. Use the remedy within two days.
