Recognition for Courage and Persistence
The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has honored the Januškevič Publishing House with its prestigious 2024 International Freedom to Publish Award. This award is given annually to a publisher outside the United States that exhibits remarkable bravery in supporting the freedom of expression. Founded by Andrej Januškevič in 2014, the publishing house operates from Poland and focuses on promoting literature in the endangered Belarusian language.
Defending the Freedom of Expression
Under the authoritarian regime led by Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the landscape for independent publishing in Belarus has become increasingly fraught with danger. The government has directly targeted Januškevič Publishing House, alongside other independent entities, by revoking licenses required for publication in Belarus. In acknowledging this recognition, Andrej Januškevič stated, “We are honored to accept AAP’s freedom to publish award, and we are thankful for the acknowledgment of our work in Belarus and in exile.” This sentiment underscores the publishing house’s commitment to preserving Belarusian language and culture, even amid adversity.
Continued Commitment to Belarusian Literature
Despite challenges, including the arrest of its founder, Januškevič Publishing House has remained steadfast in its mission. Maria A. Pallante, President and CEO of AAP, praised the publishing house, stating, “The leaders of Januškevič Publishing House have braved censorship, suffered incarceration, and endured exile.” Their unwavering dedication to providing Belarusian readers with access to literature highlights the essential role of publishing in preserving democratic ideals. Today, Januškevič continues to publish both physical and e-books, ensuring the survival of Belarusian literature in Poland and beyond.
