Sofia Coppola’s New Venture in Publishing

Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola is making headlines with her recent announcement of launching a new book imprint called Important Flowers. This initiative pays homage to her iconic 1999 film, The Virgin Suicides. In a revealing interview with Vogue on December 12, Coppola shared that she is collaborating with U.K. publisher Mack, who previously published her photography bookArchive.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look

The first release under Important Flowers is particularly exciting, as it will be a behind-the-scenes photo book showcasing images from The Virgin Suicides. While working on Archive, Coppola discovered hundreds of photographs captured by the late Corinne Day during the film’s production. The abundance of material inspired her to produce a separate book that sheds light on the film’s creation.

Supporting New Talent and Future Plans

Beyond celebrating her own work, Coppola aims to use Important Flowers as a platform to support new photographers. The imprint will also feature a 500-page visual history of the renowned French fashion house, Chanel Haute Couture, alongside a uniquely designed daily planner that resembles Coppola’s personal diary. In her own words, she expressed a desire to release books that hold personal significance, stating, “there’s a lot of heart in these because they’re subjects I care about so much.”

Looking ahead, she anticipates potential future projects that may involve reprinting out-of-print titles and even a documentary on her film Marie Antoinette, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026. As she embarks on this exciting new chapter in her career, fans are eagerly awaiting what else Important Flowers will bring to the literary world.
